  • Module 2: System innovations for sustainable development

Complexity, innovation and governance in restructuring sectoral systems of production and consumption The workshop series “Systems innovation for sustainable development” comprised three workshops during 2006 and 2007. The core question was how structural transformation in sectoral systems of production and consumption (such as energy, mobility, food) can be promoted in order to enhance the sustainability of these systems. In each of the workshops, some forty invited participants discussed relevant aspects, focussing on the issues of complexity (Workshop 1), innovation (Workshop 2) and governance (Workshop 3). The workshops were organised by a team of international researchers with joint funding by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research through its programme for socio-ecological research (www.sozial-oekologische-forschung.org). and the Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment through the Knowledge Network for System Innovations and Transitions (www.ksinetwork.nl). This site contains an overview of the workshop series including topics, programme and participants for each workshop as well as presentations and abstracts for download. A selection of papers from the workshops is will be published in special issues of international journals.

Module 3: Conflict management in infrastructure projects

Module 3 focuses on public and stakeholder participation in large infrastructure schemes – primarily in the context of airport extensions and nuclear waste repositories. The task will generally be made up of two aspects:

    (1) The interaction between formal planning and approval procedures and informal participation processes
    (2) The determination of methodical and procedural requirements of a comprehensive impact assessment with regard to the social and economic development of regions and possible reduction and compensation measures.
